charis-newOn Sunday November 15th, I found myself marching to Boston Commons with The Leadership Campaign, a student group of activists trying to get progressive climate action legislation passed in Massachusetts. Somewhere around 250 students and community members marched from M.I.T. to the Commons, singing and chanting ‘Hey hey! Ho Ho! Global warming’s got to go!’ I suspect that the level of energy and enthusiasm would have made Emma Goldman happy—she who famously coined the phrase ‘If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be a part of your revolution.’

gardensculpture_srlHistorically, artists have been the first catalysts in down times, the first to emerge with their commentary and visions of the world around them. No matter the genre: visual, performing or literary, artists do not fear the repercussion of their work. Today is no different. In fact, today is a sublime time for artists to emerge and help salvage the carnage, of the many skeleton towns, brought on by the ongoing economic state.

caroline pemberton miss australia 2007What’s the first thing that comes to mind for you when you hear the words ‘Beauty Pageant?’ Do you swoon at the thought of the evening gown competition? Do you remember the infamous blunders of contestants past? Or do you scoff, writing off the whole endeavor to a callous modern culture that makes objects out of women’s bodies?

If you’re like Caroline Pemberton, your reaction is something along those latter lines—when former Miss Australia 2007 was first asked to participate in the state-level beauty pageant in New South Wales, she ‘pooh-poohed’ the idea, thinking it would be ‘all dolled up bimbos who were a bit ditzy parading around in bikinis.’

charis-bokeThis morning I woke up surrounded by growing green things. More so than usual, this summer in Vermont is lush, splendid and infinitely edible—inspiring me to take my budding forager-self out to the forest and look for free things to munch on. What will it be? Mushrooms? Garden chard? Blueberries? Today, I think I’ll seek out the stingy bits of the yard, clip them, and make nettle soup.

Teaching and Discovering in Nepal PDF Print E-mail

charis1As my pen runs out of ink—the third one thus far—I sit on a balcony in Maharajgunj looking at the darkening sky. I find myself in Nepal once again, this time helping to shepherd a group of American high school students through a month-long experiential education program that helps them discover Nepal and themselves. It’s a beautiful thing, watching them discover, and also difficult—remembering how challenging it is to experience all these things for the first time, I find myself wanting so much to provide a safe and useful space for them to do this exploration. But I’m not sure I know the best ways to do that.
