As the celebrity morale continues to decline, children are looking else where to find role models. But since there really are not people running around the streets in superhero costumes, the search for a role model has been a little more difficult. Thankfully, Mr. Lamar Brantley has created www.rolemodel.net, a site “to promote the idea that there is within each of us the ability to inspire those around us.”
The site is geared towards children between the ages of 6 and 16, and feature certain celebrities, political figures, and many more hometown heroes. “I hope that eventually the focus will be directed more towards everyday role models and not so much on celebrity role models,” said Brantley. “I think the stories of teachers, pastors, coaches, and parents can be just as powerful as the celebrity.” Brantley’s website began as a collaborative effort with his past employers, Alan and Marcia Schulte. The trio, with funding from businessmen in the Sarasota, Florida area and local school systems, created several websites which targeted students before launching this project. Brantley eventually purchased the domain from the Schultes to create a more interactive platform and move forward with his ideas. To help move the site towards the everyday role model, all submissions are carefully reviewed and thought over. The site is looking for real stories of inspiration, similar to his own, to pass along to the rest of the Internet community. “In high school I was the battalion commander in my ROTC,” said Brantley. “The commander in charge of the ROTC was Col. Clyde Blakely. Col. Blakely took the time to really train me and teach me how to lead people – not boss but lead under my command.” Ultimately, Brantley would like to see everyday people step up to the challenge of being a role model and stop thinking so much about those who are constantly in the spotlight. “The idea of leaving a legacy seems to be fading in our society with more importance given to having a moment of fame.” Please visit www.rolemodel.net and share with the world someone special who has impacted your life.
