Since I got engaged on Labor Day weekend, I won't be one of the thousands of women in this country who gets a sparkling ring from their significant other this holiday season.
I've been told by a number of wedding planners that up to 30 percent of brides-to-be get engaged between December and February; as many as half of those women said "Yes" in December alone.

Back in the summertime, my now fiancé decided it was time to finally finish his bachelor’s degree.
He’d previously been accepted to a local college, but now had the financial aid in place. He’d asked his boss, weeks in advance, for permission to leave early a couple of days a week so he’d make it to class on time. The boss dragged her feet, and by the time she got around to denying his request, it was too late to withdraw from school. He had to make a choice: stay employed or go to school.

I distinctly remember watching the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on television.
I sat there stunned by the images of death and destruction I was seeing, feeling the sense of utter helplessness wash over me.
And then I remember having to go back to my job as a newspaper reporter, and go out into the community to get the local response to the disaster. While it was difficult to put personal feelings and emotions aside to focus on writing these stories, what I saw in the community inspired me.

When I was 10 or 11 years old, I received a blue Crayola piggy bank as a gift.
From that point forward, I hoarded every penny, dime, and dollar that came my way. Sometimes I couldn’t even fit the plastic crayon tip back on the cardboard base thanks to the dollar bills that were overflowing from the top. My mother often commented that as a teenager, I had more cash on hand than she did...

My home was built in 2007 therefore everything inside the house (appliances, heater, etc.), is relatively new; outside of a few energy efficient light bulbs, I never really considered "green-ing" my home...
