The other night over dinner, I ended a sentence with “…and that’s what happens when you let brown people into your country.” Taken out of context, one could assume any number of things about my character, as did the bus boy who was refilling my water and happened to be brown himself. I recently heard a door shut. It wasn’t loud like a slam; instead it was one of those doors that closes, so very quietly, you almost don’t notice it. It was the door to my twenties. This shouldn’t be surprising because I’ve been securely fastened into my thirties for six months now, but when I heard it I thought: “Oh wow, it’s actually happened.” You see if anything miraculous occurred the moment I turned thirty, I was too drunk to realize it. I suppose I was expecting everything to become clear, but instead everything seemed a little more fuzzy than usual.

I’m currently in recovery for being overly-responsible. This is why I can tell those who are currently addicted to responsibility—it’s never worth it. You end up in dark alleys, in the wrong part of town, doing things you never thought you’d do; like somebody else’s taxes.

I don’t sleep in. I wish I could. One of my ten commandments is: Thou shalt push the snooze button and cuddle. Unfortunately, it conflicts with another one of my ten commandments: Thou shalt get thine butt up and take thy dogs outside so they don’t pee all over thy floor.

About a month ago I was helping a girlfriend of mine celebrate her birthday in Palm Springs. In a scene that replays itself across the U.S., six girls had gathered together to have crazy-fun times and use a single bathroom. While the birthday girl lay passed out from vodka and 120 degree heat, the rest of us were getting ready, preparing for the moment when she might at last wake and want to keep the scheduled reservation for the big birthday dinner...
