March normally signifies the beginning of Spring, which in itself signifies change, growth and sunnier days ahead. I guess you could say, at attribute magazine, we are using Spring as a reason to grow and change things a bit. For those of you who read us regularly, it is important for you to read about changes to come...and for those of you who are new readers, or just passing through, we welcome you and hope you come back again, in support of our mission and our writer’s efforts...

Recall, last month, I mentioned some structural changes that were coming? Here is the news: After operating for nearly two years, we have decided to become a subscription based publication. We initially had this in place, but then changed our minds—in retrospect, I wish I had kept it in place but do not regret the decision to allow readers to enjoy our content for free. We are working on the plug-ins at present. But no worries, it will be very inexpensive and you will have several options...and we truly hope this will not deter you from visiting us, reading the articles, etc.

Many other online publications, both old and new media, are making this decision; we are not alone as advertisers are pinching their pennies and stretching every dollar. Leaving small, independent media and websites out in the dust when it comes to attracting advertising dollars.

There will be several “free” sections on the site, such as the Stick This in Your Ear podcast, Letter From the Editor and 15 Minutes section, as well as articles that are one-time contributions. But, anything written by staff writers, myself, or archived will require a subscription to access. There will also be a donation option: if you donate you will get access for a limited time.

I made this decision for multiple reasons, none of which are personal. I could care less if I benefit monetarily from my work here. It is my life’s calling; something I was led to do, therefore I obeyed. But, I never intended for my staff to be voluntary for as long as they have been. I have personally financed this endeavor from inception. I feel that we cannot flourish if that continues to be the case. Installing the subscription system will also assist in my decision-making, as we move forward.

By purchasing a subscription or making a donation you will be showing the staff/writers and myself that you appreciate our efforts. That’s it. What will you gain? Our continued hard work and dedication, the opportunity to enable our growth by bringing on additional writers and staff. You will also receive the monthly edition straight to your inbox and we are working on a gift with purchase and seeing what other options we can offer.

We are still working on new offerings to come....

I wanted to be upfront with you before we installed the system. I anticipate it happening by, if not before, the April issue. If you are a registered user, we will probably send you a note, so my apologies in advance for any intrusion.

I feel the writers gave a lot of themselves this month. The columns are outstanding as is Katina Williams’ review of Colum McCann’s new book, Let the Great World Spin (A&E-Literature). She really presents a well thought out overview. Katina’s review of Mitch Albom’s, Have a Little Faith from February, was picked up on the book’s Wiki page. Go Katina!

Thanks so much for your patronage. If you have a bone to pick, praise or comments to present, feel free to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
