Kurt Weitzmann-Comedian, Writer & Film Producer
What were you in life before stand up comedy? I majored in photography in college, much to the chagrin of my parents. Then I began performing stand up comedy much to the chagrin of everyone else. Coming from a fine arts back ground gave me a hefty dose of cynicism and the drive to be more challenging with my material, which, in the wrong hands can actually be at odds with the medium of stand up. It's hard to expand people's minds over the sound of crunching nachos in a sports bar in Modesto. But the artist's psyche has that glorious dichotomy of wanting to challenge the viewer and push for a reaction, while at the same time vying for her love and acceptance. And the need for love and acceptance almost always wins out. So I eventually got funny. Maybe too funny. Do you see yourself doing anything else? We know you plunged into film production this year, are there more projects on the horizon? I love the process of writing. I have written three plays, two of which have been produced. I tell myself all the time that money isn't important (and it's not when you have it), but there is no money in writing plays. I made a great film called "Last Call" this year, and I think if I can get that out there to festivals and just hand it to a few influential people I know, it could open a door or two. It really is a wonderful film. Tell us something you did as a kid that you still incorporate into your life? I still look at the world aroundme and shake my head. I don't understand most of it. And I still think that that is the beauty of it all. Once you stop shaking your head, they've got you. Anything you wish to plug? I have created this wonderful little ramshackle comedy production company called Comedy Noir Productions with my buddy Howard Stone. We write and produce challenging comedy theme shows. We most recently produced The Jesus Roast (A celebrity roast of your Lord and savior Jesus H. Christ) to critical acclaim, and we are now on to the Hitler Roast. It is as wrong and as funny as it sounds. Roasting Hitler, the most evil man in history, are such unforgettable characters as Caligula, Idi Amin, Anne Frank, Joan Rivers, Carnac The Magnificent, the marquis De Sade, and more. The evening is hosted by, Jeff Foxworthy. It is a great show not to be missed. It will be at Theater Asylum in Los Angeles the last three weekends of September. It is a star studded cast, and some of the very best comedy writing you're gonna see anywhere. Check it out. If you hate Hitler, you will love this show! Our thanks and gratitude to Kurt for always supplying attribute with plenty of laughs. Visit our 'film' section to read about the experience of making his film "Last Call"
