The imagination of a child is a beautiful thing. When a child discovers they can direct their imagination into something fruitful—it’s even more precious. Jonathan Vandenberg was such a child.

After seeing the courageous Elysia Skye on the Style Network show “Style My Nest,” we had to have an interview. She embodies everything we look for in a subject: a creator (actress, producer, director and writer), fun, intelligent and a fighter. Ms. Skye, after being diagnosed in 2005, is a breast cancer survivor who now brings her own unique outlook on the disease in her efforts to find a cure and help others see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Lucky for us, she enthusiastically agreed to let us pick her brain and find out a little more about this fabulous GenXer.

What were you in life before stand up comedy?
I majored in photography in college, much to the chagrin of my parents. Then I began performing stand up comedy much to the chagrin of everyone else. Coming from a fine arts back ground gave me a hefty dose of cynicism and the drive to be more challenging with my material, which, in the wrong hands can actually be at odds with the medium of stand up. It's hard to expand people's minds over the sound of crunching nachos in a sports bar in Modesto. But the artist's psyche has that glorious dichotomy of wanting to challenge the viewer and push for a reaction, while at the same time vying for her love and acceptance. And the need for love and acceptance almost always wins out. So I eventually got funny. Maybe too funny.
